New Mexico is an integral part of the United States and yet has a life of its own. It’s a different world altogether with an other-worldly feel about every part of it. New Mexico has the special appeal of being caught in a time warp. Its history dates back far before Columbus set foot on the continent.

New Mexico is a strangely exotic state. The unique blend of Native American, Mexican, Spanish and Western cultural influences helped New Mexico to develop a colorful and distinctive spirit, making it the Land of Enchantment as it is popularly known. The state is diverse, not only geologically but also culturally. The state has a rich and proud Anglo-American heritage and is home to the largest population of Hispanic people. The town of Gallup calls itself the “Indian Capital of the World” and serves as a trading center for more than 20 different Indian groups. Every August it is the site of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial.
New Mexico has all kinds of landscapes. From mountains to the desert, the canyons to the plains, the sacred river Rio Grande and the vast blue sky, there is so much to see and do with surprises at every corner. 1/4 of New Mexico is forested, and the state has 7 National Forests including the Nation’s largest, the 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest which includes the Gila Wilderness.
Albuquerque and Santa Fe are the main urban areas in New Mexico. Both are attractive towns with excellent tourist infrastructure. Cimarron was once known as the “Cowboy capital of the world”. Some of the old west’s most famous names, such as Kit Carson and “Buffalo Bill” Cody lived there. For the adventurous there is the El impossible national park and White Sands. All this is enough to draw thousands of visitors every year, to revel in the treasure house called New Mexico.
