North Carolina resides in the lap of nature with rugged mountains, valleys, flower-filled meadows, waterfalls, streams and rivers brimming with trout, scenic drives, and miles of hiking trails forming the western border of the state. To the east is the Atlantic coast with good beaches, fascinating historical sites and natural refuges that stretch from the thin band of barrier islands known as the Outer Banks to the Cape Fear Coast and the seaport of Wilmington in the south.
The state boasts of big, metropolitan cities, cutting-edge architecture, high-tech industry and intricate highways. There is commerce, industry and innovation in this setting of old style graciousness that adds to the charm of the place and in small pockets of pastoral countryscapes, the old south does live on that is reminiscent of the novels of such Deep South authors as Tennessee Williams, Eudora Welty, and William Faulkner.
The Carolina of yore may live on in Hollywood, but the talk today is of the New South. Tourism is important, with visitors spending more than $1 billion annually. Sports include year-round golfing, skiing at mountain resorts, both fresh- and salt-water fishing, and hunting. Among the major attractions are the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge national Parkway, the Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout national seashores and the Wright Brothers National memorial at Kitty Hawk.
