The smallest state in the United States, Rhode Island, is the beach state. It also has an interesting colonial history of its own. Religious exiles settled in the region, naming it Rhode Island because to them it resembled the Rhode of the Aegean. Between then and now, much has changed. However, the historic heritage of the place has been preserved adding to the charm of state.

Rhode Island is not really an island. It has been jaggedly cleaved in two, bisected by Narragansett Bay, leaving an irregular coastline of more than 400 miles. The capital city of Rhode Island is Providence- a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage. In the summers it boasts festivals along the river, which flows through the heart of the city displaying arts, crafts, performance artists, and gondolas. This coastal city attracts millions of visitors who can’t help but gape at the extravagant 19th-century mansions of America’s wealthy families, the relics of a golden age.
Finally, there is Block Island, which is a 1-hour ferry ride from Point Judith. Rhode Island has more than 100 beaches. Besides, more than 60% of its area is covered by woodlands preserved in 53 state parks. These unspoilt woody haunts make a perfect getaway for outdoor activities like hunting, camping and hiking. It is easy to understand why Rhode Island became a popular Mecca for tourists all over the world.
