South Carolina, known as the Palmetto State, is an attractive place to spend your vacations. It is a small and beautiful state packed with attractions. The state has rolling mountains, green farmlands and plains that make for adventures such as mountaineering, hiking and camping. However, what steals the eye is the beach area of South Carolina. The Grand Strand along the sun-soaked coast is extremely popular with its Myrtle Beach, famous for its family entertainment, amusement park attractions and a haven for golfers, swimmers and other recreational enthusiasts.

A string of resorts are dotted along the coast to historic Georgetown. Charleston is one of the most elegant cities of the state. It reflects the life in the early years of the United States. Visit Fort Sumter, where the civil war started. South of Charlestown the land breaks up into small marshy islands inhabited by the Gullah tribe, descendants of the West African slaves freed from slavery in 1865. Columbia, the capital located at the centre of the state also holds several reminders of the civil war. Each bronze star on the Capitol building indicates where a cannon ball struck the building, and the statue of George Washington out front lost the bottom of his cane to a cannon ball too!
