Lake and La Porte counties offer a variety of places for sports teams to play, with numerous accommodations and entertainment options available. Crown Point, Highland, Gary, Michigan City and Hammond are a few cities in northwest Indiana that are worth exploring. Only a 30-minute drive from downtown Chicago, Northwest Indiana has facilities for everything from volleyball to golf to soccer.
PLACES TO PLAY: U.S. Steel Yard. This 6,000-seat ballpark is home to the Gary South Shore Rail Cats. The park is considered one of the top minor league baseball facilities in the country, being named “Best New Ballpark” by Chicago Magazine. Tournament organizers can rent out the stadium to play games, and the stadium does things like letting a team practice under lights to gain experience in such an environment. In April, there is a month-long event called the High School Challenge, where 40 high school teams are invited to play a total of 20 games. The stadium does its best to open itself up to the community and is a great field for groups to consider.
PLACES TO HAVE FUN: Deep River Waterpark. This Hammond water playground has two river rides, a wave ride, a water play area named Playzone, Mayor Byrdovich’s Waterific Courthouse and the world’s first double-dueling cannon bowl ride. Riders on the speed slide Dragon plummet up to 35 m.p.h. PLACES TO STAY:
