CONNECTICUT Sports Complex Construction has just begun on Coplex Sports, an indoor/ outdoor facility in Chesire. The two ice arenas in Phase I will open in March 2009. The rinks will feature locker rooms, a pro shop and stadium seating. The complex will be home to various groups, including the Connecticut Polar Bears, the state’s first all-girls ice hockey program. Inside the dual rinks will be a 10,000-square-foot gym. DELAWARE New Speedway Icon Miles the Monster, one of the world’s largest fiberglass structures and the largest attraction at a NASCAR track, now greets visitors to Dover International Speedway. The five-story monument, a replica of the trophy that winning NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers receive at the one-mile oval, holds an actual racecar in the grip of his right hand in the newly created Victory Plaza. NEW HAMPSHIRE Ski Shrine The New England Ski Museum in Franconia Notch State Park tells the history of skiing through artifacts and vintage films shown continuously in the theater. A display on alpine skis follows their development from a pair of primitive wooden slats with leather toe straps. NEW YORK A Fan’s Dream The Sports Museum of America, the nation’s first and only museum to celebrate all sports, opened in May in New York City. Located near the Wall Street financial district in Lower Manhattan, the museum spotlights the history and significance of sports in American culture with films, interactive exhibits and memorabilia.
